a little while ago i came up with a new real compact (the most compact ive seen so far) up/down counter. it uses sand and is easy to change the output from one single output at the time or it counts more/less each time, also you cant stack it real easy and it has 1 space between each output. after i finally came up with a counter design i had lots of ideas to use it for, one of them was some sort of ascii but it uses the whriting system of a ti-84 calculater which works diffrent then youre normal keyboard. One of the features is that when you want to change like the ''i'' in minecraft you need to use the cursor to the i and change it when you change it only that letter will change and the rest of the word will stay the same. the way the letter changing works is by using automatic resseting rs norlatches which is a line of rs nor latches and when you press an input the line of redstone will reset all of the memory cells first and then the selected output can go through bassicly its another kind of d-flipflop that overwrites automaticly. it also used the up/down counter which automaticly activates after pressing a button, so you wont have to use the cursor all the time. the direction of the input is selected by several lines of pistons that make the input only go to one direction at the time. I also used this counter for paint but that one didnt worked out as i wanted it to( it worked but the onn/off blinking curser to on state was 3 blocks tall so it wouldnt be compact if you wanted a real high screen.
