I make all the large locks on my friends server, and in my single player world i have made a piston elevator, a countdown timer (20 seconds) and currently a mob arena that has 100 second rounds and 5 rounds where 8 zombies spawn every ten seconds and a total of 400 will spawn overall and a command block stops the spawners after you die. There is also an upgrade system i have in place using mob drops you get in the arena you drop them down a hole that once you throw 5 drops you will receive an (emerald, gold, diamond, and iron) that you then take to the top of the arena to use on a beacon or to a crafting bench to make a sword. or armor in higher rounds *I plan on making the bench a device you must purchase first.
