Past Redstone Experience:
The first redstone machine I show you in the video I linked below is a hidden 2 wide stairway. It uses corner stairs to cover it up when it is deactivated.
The second machine is a 2x2 hidden floor entrance/trap.
The third machine is a 1x1 version of the 2x2 hidden floor entrance/trap. It uses the same design.
